Non-Restorative Sleep
Sleeping a full 8 hours but waking feeling as though you haven't slept at all.
Biological Mechanism
Hormonal fluctuations, particularly estrogen decline, are associated with a reduction in slow-wave (deep) sleep and REM sleep. Micro-arousals—even without full conscious awakening—fragment sleep architecture. You may be 'unconscious' for 8 hours, but the biological maintenance processes of true sleep are constantly interrupted.
Common Misdiagnoses
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Vitamin D or Iron deficiency
Evidence-Based Treatments
- 01HRT
Can improve sleep architecture by reducing micro-arousals.
- 02Sleep study evaluation
To rule out occult sleep apnea.
