Early Morning Waking
Waking abruptly between 3 AM and 5 AM, wide awake, unable to return to sleep.
Biological Mechanism
Often linked to a dysregulated HPA axis and premature cortisol awakening response. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, the body's stress response system becomes more reactive. A drop in blood sugar or a minor temperature fluctuation that would previously go unnoticed now triggers a cortisol spike, snapping the brain into full wakefulness.
Common Misdiagnoses
Depression (classic symptom is early morning waking), Sleep apnea, Hyperthyroidism
Evidence-Based Treatments
- 01Continuous HRT
Stabilizing hormones can dampen the HPA axis hyper-reactivity.
- 02Evening blood sugar stabilization
A small protein/fat snack before bed can prevent nocturnal hypoglycemia.
