Brain Zaps
A brief, startling sensation of an electrical shock passing through the brain or head.
Biological Mechanism
Thought to be caused by sudden alterations in serotonin and GABA levels. Because estrogen modulates neurotransmitter synthesis and receptor density, sudden drops can temporarily short-circuit sensory processing, mirroring the well-known withdrawal effects of SSRI antidepressants.
Common Misdiagnoses
Seizures, Multiple Sclerosis, Medication withdrawal (if not on meds)
Evidence-Based Treatments
- 01Hormonal stabilization
Consistent estrogen levels prevent the profound drops.
