Urinary Urgency
The sudden, desperate need to urinate, sometimes with accompanying leaks (urge incontinence).
Biological Mechanism
Estrogen deficiency affects the detrusor muscle of the bladder and weakens the urethral sphincter. The bladder becomes 'irritated' by the lack of hormonal support.
Common Misdiagnoses
Overactive bladder syndrome, Stress incontinence (they are different)
Evidence-Based Treatments
- 01Local Vaginal Estrogen
Plumps the peri-urethral tissue, improving the 'seal' of the sphincter.
- 02Pelvic floor physical therapy
Addresses the muscular component of incontinence.
