Elevated Cholesterol
A sudden spike in LDL (bad) cholesterol, even if you exercise and eat well.
Biological Mechanism
Estrogen facilitates the clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood by the liver. When estrogen levels drop, LDL clearance slows down, leading to rapid increases in serum LDL and shifts in lipid profiles (higher triglycerides, lower HDL).
Common Misdiagnoses
Dietary indiscretion, Familial hypercholesterolemia (if assumed entirely genetic)
Evidence-Based Treatments
- 01HRT (Transdermal)
Transdermal estrogen is lipid-neutral or slightly beneficial, whereas oral estrogen specifically increases HDL and lowers LDL (but has venous thromboembolism risks).
- 02Statins
Standard of care if cardiovascular risk algorithm indicates high risk.
